We totally have 4 digits followed by 2 letters. And the given license plate starts with 79 and it is a government vechicle. So, the possiblities are


1*1*10*10*3*3 = 900

In three hours the police can inspect only 18 vehicles as he takes 10 mins for each vehicle.

The answer should be 18/900 = 1/50

I got also 1/50 as an answer: First numbers are 79XX LL so for the numbers and the letters we have 10x10x3x3( repetitions for letters and numbers)which is900, so they have to check 900 cars, for 3 hours they can inspect 18 cars so prob is :18/900=1/50..IMO

I was on the right track, for some reason I applied repetition to the numbers but not to the letters..
I think 1/50 is the correct answer - let's see if others have any comments.

I got the same answer using the same rationale. This seems unusually easy for a Manhattan problem, and thus gives me pause.

I wonder if I have forgotten something.

it can only have the letters ABC


total # of license plates possible for a government vehicle with starting letters 79...

favorable number of ways = 10 * 10 * 3 * 3 = 900


total # of cars the police can inspect =18 ( 6 per hour *3 =18)

required probability = 18/900 = 2/100 =1/50

I agree - the answer is 1/50. The answer "seems" easy. Hopefully, we're right.
