Hi,

I am taking one recommendation from my current supervisor. However, for the 2nd recommendation,i am thinking of taking it from the division governor of toastmasters club.I have worked closely with him ( I am the vice president of the club). However, most of the schools want the 2nd recommendation to be of professional nature.Should i take it from him or take it from a supervisor of my previous project(even he can provide a good recommendation).

Thanks,
Shreeraj

Also to add,i am applying with a 630 score(Q39,V37) to cornell,NUS and emory by month end.I will be retaking GMAT and sending the updated scores by 1st week of feb(provided they are higher).I have 4.5 years of work ex as a SAP Energy consultant in Accenture.Won 2 international competitions and also have good extra curriculars.
I have spoken to the admissions team and they are ok with it.Am i acting too ambitious?
Do you think this is a good plan? Also, last year i had applied to cornell using gre score(now expired) but got rejected after interview.
Should i be changing everything in the essays and select new recommeders or stick to those recommenders and make few changes in essays?

Thanks,
Shreeraj

Hey shreerajp99,

Thanks for reaching out to me. The best way to really irk the admissions committee is to not follow directions. This would include things like improper formatting, not actually answering the essay question (i.e. cutting and pasting from other schools), and submitting a recommendation from your ToastMasters division Gov.

I mean the following the best possible way – you lack perspective, and it is not your fault. I have the benefit of seeing thousands of applicants, you only have the benefit of reading wacky responses on GMAT forums. Given the cursory information I have, the ToastMasters LOR seems rather weak. Not only is it not what they want, but you have to consider what other people will be providing. Legitimately, there will be other applicants providing 2 great recommendations from their superiors. It is very possible that one of these superiors will be fairly high up in the organization, and the other will be their immediate supervisor. You – on the other hand – will be providing them with a recommendation from Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a fine organization, but it is not one that you should think is held in high regard by an admissions committee. Because it really is not. The types of skills that you develop in Toastmasters are requisite skills – skills that the admissions committee expects you to already have. Now, I know you may have helped build the Toastmasters organization in your area - but that is lightweight when compared to what they really want.

TLDR - If they want a professional recommendation, give them a professional recommendation. In life, if you have to rationalize something longer than 5 seconds, that something is probably not the right thing to do.

Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti

Hey shreerajp99,

Thanks for reaching out to me - again. I don't think it is a question of being ambitious – if they are okay with it, then do it. It is pretty binary at this point – get a higher GMAT score, or do not get a higher GMAT score. I am not really sure how being ambitious or aggressive comes into play here. Just get the higher GMAT score, and they will consider it. End of story.

With respect to your other questions – since I don't have access to your first app, it is hard for me to tell you what may or may not have happened. Based on the information you gave me, I would say that your application was probably okay – because you did get the interview. I also think that you may have flubbed your interview - which would have shafted you in the end. I would have told you to focus on focusing heavily on getting a good GMAT score, prepping for the interview a lot more, and not spend a lot of time completely changing your essays. If you show up this year with completely different goals, you are going to look like someone without a clear idea of what you really want to do. You look like someone who is just telling the admissions committee what they want to hear. Since, I am not sure what you have done over the last year, and how your managers may have changed, I cannot really tell you who you recommenders from work should be. However, I can tell you that you probably do not want one of these recommendations coming from Toastmasters.

Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti
