Have to agree with Mr Black, it will be tough. I am on the fringe of investment management (financial analyst) currently at work, possess a CFA charter, but can not fully break into where I want to in Investment management.

Never give up on the dream tho.

It really depends on your background and how applicable it is to the investment management position you want to join. Either that, or you attended Stanford/Harvard/Wharton and basically get into a feeder program such as PIMCO or Blackrock. Its not impossible but the chips are stacked against you. I know of people who worked in relevent industries that they now cover from an Investment Management standpoint (think oil engineering picking energy stocks, tech engineering investment in tech companies). Also, its really about having a network. You need to be networked with that crowd/community. They run in very tight circles.
