What are my chances at SMU/Texas A&M/Rice [#permalink] New post   03 Apr 2012, 19:36
I recently took the GMAT for the second time, and my second score was 640 (39V, 39Q). My quant score is right at the 50 percentile range, so that is what I am most nervous about. The last two practice tests I took were 660 and 650. I attended an SEC university where I held multiple leadership positions and graduated with a 3.4/4.0 in December 2009. I have been in the workforce for just under two years as a structured lending credit analyst in PWM at a major bank. I intend to work for another two years in Finance before applying to full-time MBA for Fall 2015 enrollment.

My question is, give the quantitative nature of my work experience, will my relatively low quant score hurt my application? I'm willing to study for another couple months and give it a third try (I certainly have plenty of time...), but I don't want to waste any more time on the boring GMAT than I need to. Would I be anywhere near the scholarship range for these schools? Particularly SMU?

Hi,

Since you have got time to apply, i would suggest you to re-take GMAT.

I understand that it's boring to re-take, but believe me it's worth re-taking especially scholarship.

Take a break of 10 days ( not more than 10/15 days ideally, else you loose momentum ) , start studying and retake

Hi,

You stats are inline for SMU, A&M might be a stretch.

Texas I assume is in reference to UT Austin, and Rice, especially for Rice, you want to get a more balanced score closer to 670+ range and get the quant as close to 80% percentile as possible since the applicant pools for these two schools are quite competitive for their Energy specialized MBA coursework with strong recruiting to oil majors as well as the great tuition for instate students at UT Austin.

The Texas schools are quite popular and more competitive than you think.

So, as you can see his GPA is in line with the schools but his GMAT is 30 points below average for Texas Austin and Rice like I had mentioned. You can also see from the admission rate that its not as easy as you made it sound. But with a 670 there would be no doubts for Texas, Rice and the rest.
