I have a pretty low GPA, 2.9, but am targeting a high GMAT score. I have 5-6 years of work experience. I have strong recommendations and will be working on my essays later this summer. The schools I am interested in:

Tuck
Stern
Columbia
Yale SOM
HKUST

Are these schools in my range? If not what schools do you suggest I apply to?

Thanks for your posting.

To be honest, the content that you provided was so vague that it makes giving an assessment difficult.

First of all, with your GPA, you have used all of your margin of error at all top programs and this means that every aspect of your candidacy moving forward has to be outstanding -- including GMAT, essays, recommendations, resume, interview, etc.
Acceptance to some top programs with your GPA is possible, but will be most difficult at Columbia and Yale. From experience, these two schools place the most emphasis on all aspects of your academic performance and a 2.9 is out of the range that they look for.
The other three schools on your list are more open to your grade situation.

I would recommend that you also consider Ross, Fuqua, Darden, and Johnson. I would consider your chances at these schools more realistic.

Sorry for the vagueness of my profile. I am just very worried about my low GPA. In your opinion is it even worth applying to Columbia and Yale if my GPA is that low? Would it be better to replace those schools when I apply for schools like Fuqua & Darden?

I don't think anyone can really tell, because of the fact that schools consider the entire package. If your GPA is low, but your the rest of your application is outstanding, you may be able to pull it off.

If you provide more details, we can give you better answers.

I recommend putting your energies into applications where you have the best chance of being admitted. I am not saying do not apply, but be smart about which reach schools are most open to your circumstances and profile. I would swap Columbia an Yale for Fuqua and Darden.

There is no way to tell if you have a chance or not without a GMAT... everybody thinks that they will score high but truth is most of the people don't even break into the 600s.. Take the GMAT first then post your question..
