Re: One benefit of learning to speak a sophisticated language [#permalink]
This was very confusing for me. Finally came down to A and E.
Agree with others, E seems better.

When is it better to use "instead of" vs "rather than"??

It was little confusing to me as well. But thought of nailing E.

rather than should be used since we are indicating a preference between choices.
C and D are out
A and B - awkward

E is the best choice.

noted !! independently is adverb as well as separately

instead of +noun ,
in place of +noun,
in lieu of + noun,
rather than ex I would rather go swimming than go to the library
ex I would watch TV rather see movies
ex I would live in town rather in the country.
