Re: if x and y are integrs greater than 1, is x a multiple of y [#permalink]

if x and y are integrs greater than 1, is x a multiple of y ?

1) 3y^2 + 7y = x

y(3y+7) = x

x is a multiple of y.

2) x^2 - x is a multiple of y

x(x-1) = y

y is a multiple of x.

We can then say x is not a multiple of y.

Is the answer D?

Hi AK,
If x is a multiple of y, then x/y has to be an integer.
In the second case, x(x-1)=cy where c is a constant.
x/y can be a integer only if c/x-1 is an integer, which we cannot decide.
Hence S2 shud be insuff.
