I have a genearal question about the work experience required for Harvard.
I am currently 25 years old and have re-entered my undergraduate program. I had left the school when I was 19 and worked full time in a customer service job. I moved up to the position to acting manager, and then team leader. I currently go to school full time and also work full time at the position of operations coordinater in provisioning in a telecom company. I am responsible for provisioning accounts and dealing with vendors etc. My other duties include creating and training manuals and providing assistance to our small team of 14. I am responsible for coming up with new procedures, escalated issues. In addition I create an analyise progress reports for each agent and instruct them on how to improve. Is this type of work experince something harvard or iv league schools would find useful.
I am not planning to apply to harvard until 2009, when I graduate, but wanted to know if there is anything I should do to improve the work experience
Keep in mind I work full time and also go to school full time. Thank you
nitostyle,
I would say that the work you currently do will not be strong enough to get Harvard's attention or that of other "ultra elite" programs. It's not that there's anything wrong with the nature of your industry; it's that they want to see outsized impact and leadership and I didn't see anything especially unusual or "oh, wow" in what you gave me. So if you really want to aim high, you should seek out more and greater leadership opportunities. Schools understand that doing so can be difficult when you are early in your career, which is why they will also respect leadership experiences outside of work -- that's something you can begin to really accumulate now. So go for it! You have given yourself the time.
Good luck,
