I am noticing that many business school programs are accepting either the GMAT or GRE. Does anyone know what kind of score I can expect from taking the GRE if I am getting around 550 GMAT scores on practice tests? I’ve heard that the Quant is easier on the GRE, and the Verbal is less tricky.

My wife was prepping for GRE while I was prepping for GMAT and we gave them 2 weeks apart. The quant was similar though GMAT was tougher. The verbal was very different and GRE was easier. However, GRE puts a lot of importance on vocabulary. Even the sentence completions and RCs have a lot of vocabulary based questions. So you will need to spend some time memorizing the word lists. Overall I think GRE maybe easier to score. However keep in mind that GRE will undergo significant changes from Oct 2007 I think and it will become almost similar to the GMAT in structure and difficulty level.

I would agree, GRE is easier for quant, but you do indeed need to know your vocab. As the other poster said that's supposed to change in the fall, so vocab won't be as important.

I'd say if you're stronger on quant, take the GMAT. If you're stronger on verbal, take the GRE.

Is there some kind of equation that can convert your GMAT score to an estimated GRE score? If the average GMAT score is 540, what would likely be their GRE score?

one month apart i took the GMAT and then GRE.

GMAT i scored 490

GRE i scored 1160. i actually scored 40 pts higher on math than verbal, which i believe has to do with vocabulary memorization. but my quant score was absolutely higher than the GMAT (where i came in at a dismal 11%).

Bump. Is the GRE a test that a person tends to score more consistently on? I noticed that on the GMAT I range anywhere from 650 on one day, to 540 to 490 another.
