Hi,

Last time when I took GMAT, I scored 4/6 = 30% on AWA (GMAT: 680 [V-31=62%, Q-50=95%].

I applied to Kellogg, Sloan, LBS. The feedback from all the schools was that I should improve my verbal score and AWA scores. My other credential were very competitive.

This time, I scored 4.5/6 = 49% on AWA (GMAT: 720 [V-38=84%, Q-50=95%].

Could I still be rejected just on the basis of my GMAT (specifically low AWA) score if I reapply to these schools?

I plan to apply to: Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Sloan, LBS, Insead, and IMD

Not at all important. Anything below a 4.0 is questioned. But you'll be perfectly fine. Some schools don't even read the essay.

Your improved verbal puts you above the 80% and also above the 700 line. Your GMAT wont be a concern to them anymore like it was when you had a 62% verbal score...that would have raised questions about your english ability.

Dang- you seem to be like me...:)

Scored 4.5 AWA the first time and 4.0 the second time around. From what I have heard, it shouldn't be a problem. Anything less than a 4 is what "might" raise some concerns. I attended an admissions event last week, and the adcom director said that they do have access to the essays that you wrote while giving your GMAT but then do not refer to them unless something seems amiss with respect to your essays being absolutely spectacular and your AWA is on the lower end. Even then, I believe that they check for the language- and not really for the logic flow etc. on which you could have been scored in the AWA.

anything below 4 will probably keep you out of a good program. the language the GMAC uses in their scoring guidelines tells adcoms that anything below 4 is NOT GOOD.!!(i.e. 1-3 has negative connotations in the description. 4 uses neutral verbage, 5-6 positive wording)

most schools just want you to have a four. i think if you are international they might scrutinize the score more as a way to make sure you wrote your application essays and didn't pay someone else to do it... i.e. if your app essays use perfect prose, but you scored a 4 on AWA it might raise some questions.
