1) Yeah, perfectly well. I never actually went to support guys (I'm a techie and can do everything myself), but whatever they asked, I could install. It's just a plain generic WinXP after all.

2) MacBook Pro 15" is $2000 + tax. There are more expensive models, but I don't think they're worth the money.

My friend has a tablet. I don't know about other schools, but at Fuqua we get tons and tons of hand-outs. We get lecture notes (which are sort of like a textbook chapter for the class), we get slide decks of the lecture, and we sometimes get other stuff (articles, cases, sample exams, etc). This all piles up a lot, and means lots of giant binders. My friend doesn't drag around a binder -- she just downloads the deck or the lecture note and then uses her tablet to take notes right on top of the class materials.

I don't know if all the classes lend themselves to this, but some definitely did.

Yeah, but the point is you can do the same even not having a tablet. OneNote will allow you to type notes in random spots over the handout, and most people type faster (and in better font ;)) than they can handwrite.

I hear ya, but I do find that taking notes (as opposed to writing) by hand is much quicker. I'm forever drawing arrows, making weird marks that are my own version of shorthand, etc. Duke doesn't allow laptops in class (they make some exceptions for tablets), but even if they did, I wouldn't use it to make notes.

Oh really. Haas allows laptops most of the time, except fluffy classes where you wouldn't take notes anyway.

What's OneNote? Is that a Mac only thing?

How are schools with multimedia computers?

I have an N93, which can record videos and voice memos.

oh ok... I will have to check out OneNote then... maybe I won't need a tablet (saves the weight when I get an ultraportable).

In a couple of years they might be ok. Motorola have a prototype device with a built in projector and there are already virtual keypads which use infra-red to detect the position of the keys.

Well, maybe, but at this point it seems like the schools don't really enjoy students using weird fancy devices instead of laptops.

Besides, I personally wouldn't advise going that road - while those gadgets claim to have "full laptop functionality", many things are much less convenient to do (typing on a virtual keyboard is much slower, for example; reading the handout from a 4" screen is a pain). Frankly, I just don't see any reason not to buy a laptop. You're not going to be on the run all day, so these 4-5 pounds in your bag aren't a huge deal.

All depends on what the user finds most convenient.

Someone who hates laptops but loves smartphones may well perform their work better using their mobile device. Shouldn`t have to limit their use. Not that it affects me, I`m comfortable using either

Well, I'm a huge gadget lover myself, but I still stand on an opinion that writing a 10-page paper on your cell phone is ridiculous, however "smart" the phone is. That's just my humble opinion though.

another issue: the smaller the device, the higher the rate of repetitive stress injury.

So ultraportables, or at least small screens, nice and sweet and all...but for work at home (is there any work that you do at home in business school or do you stay in study rooms all day long?) do you connect your laptop to a full size screen?

thanks.

Re: Laptop (and bag) for Bschool... [#permalink]
I have to do a LOT at home. Study rooms are for group work, there will never be enough fot everyone to stay and do everything at school. Besides, often times you'll have to work on your paper at say 3AM, when the school is closed.

As to the screen - initially I thought about buying a Lenovo ultraportable and ordered an LCD screen, keyboard and mouse (12" is not good to stare at all day). However, when I changed gears to 15" Mac, I canceled all that and use just the laptop.
