Hi everyone,
I just finished my exam this afternoon and wanted to write a debrief because this forum has helped me tremendously during my preparation.
1) Prep Time: 10 weeks
2) Materials Used:
The 3
OG books
MGMAT Books (I didn't use CR and RC)
Powerscore CR Bible (I just read the book once)
MGMAT CATS (I took 5 of them)
GMATPREP (I took each of them twice)
KAPLAN 800 (SC and CR chapters were helpful)
3) Practice CAT scores
MGMAT #1 640
MGMAT #2 670
MGMAT #3 700
MGMAT #4 750
MGMAT #5 750
GMATPREP #1 700
GMATPREP #2 720
GMATPREP #1 770
GMATPREP #2 750
** Actual GMAT 740
On my last
MGMAT CAT, the breakdown was Q48 and V44. In my opinion, I would say the difficulty level (both Q and V) between the actual exam and
MGMAT CATs is similar. However, the format is slightly different (at least for me). It took me awhile get used to it.
Taking practice tests is a great way to monitor your progress. But GMATPREP tests are the best! Although I got good scores on the last two
MGMAT CATs, the GMATPREP questions threw me off in the beginning. I think it's better to practice with GMATPREP questions. Just don't rely on the scores as you repeat each test.
As you can see, my preparation strategy was very similar to others on this forum. I think it is a good idea to go through debriefs and create your own strategy before you start.
I took my first CAT after I went through the three
OG books. After the first CAT, I tried to tackle my weaknesses one by one. Once I boosted my Q score to a certain level, I knew I had to focus more on verbal because of the strong quant backgrounds of most top scoring applicants. You will know what I mean when you go through the math discussion on this forum. Some people use calculus to explain questions (cosign, tangent etc...WOW). I am just happy to have Q49 =) I forgot my calculus long time ago. I can't beat someone who still remember these. English is not my native language. I came to the states when I was a sophomore in high school (I am 24 right now). But practicing and reviewing your mistakes will help you.
During the last week, I focused on going over only the official questions (
OG and GMATPREP). Originally I planned to go over the questions I got wrong on
MGMAT but I didn't have time. Plus, the format is slightly different. So I decided to focus on the official questions to familiarize myself with them before the test. As many people said before, you won't learn much during the last week. I think reviewing your mistakes is a better way to prepare yourself right before the test.
4) Test Day:
Quantitative - I got a variety of questions: number properties, equations, probability etc...but not many from statistics.
Verbal - Again, there was nothing out of the ordinary...4 RC passages, CR and SC questions.
AWA - I didn't prepare much for this part. I just read a couple of essays and briefly looked over the sample templates on this forum.
I am happy with 740...even though 750+ would have been awesome! I am not planning to take it again.
Thank you for all your help!
