What do you mean specific formats? Do you mean "doc vs pdf" or do you mean specifically tailored content and ordering for each school???? Boy the latter would SUCK!

OT: Do you know the difference between a CV and a Resume?

I was told a CV is for academic applications, and Resume for Professional applications.

CV's are used in academia and tend to be much more detailed than a professional resume... I've never had to write a CV myself

Hi,
My first thought is what separates the two is thoroughness and detail. The academic CV's that I have read have both a much higher level of detail (as compared to a resume) and, especially for folks with some mileage, no artificial length limits. However, I think perhaps what constitutes a "CV" (and who asks for it) varies with geography as well as field. I believe the distinction you make above is certainly correct in the US, e.g., my brother (Associate Professor) has a CV but, for any field other than academics, this ponderous document would certainly garner the ire of the HR department. However, all the European adcoms / marketing people I met with asked for my "CV" prior our meeting. I certainly assumed that they were not looking for a 10 page solioquy about the minutiae of my academic and workaday achievements. I had no direct feedback about its length or level of detail but the document I provided seemed to satisfy the purpose for which it was composed.

I seem to remember that you noted at one point that you thought US resumes were too brief?

Help!

Re: Resume Templates [#permalink]
I think I did a hybrid between Tuck and Chicago's templates. Just downloaded some resumes I found from their resume book and edited the template myself.

I didn't want my resume to look exactly like any specific school's template, since I was applying to multiple schools and that may send the wrong message.

If anyone needs the template, let me know and I can email it to them.

No some schools require different things. Chicago has a sample and instructions as part of their application. They want things like salary info and people you supervisor on there if I remember correctly.

You can find resume books online for some schools and clubs so those will give you an idea of how schools like them to look.

Someone posted a priceless document on here a while back. It was over 100 (maybe over 200) resumes from Wharton MBA students. What was interesting was that each and every single one was in the absolutely exact format / font / style as the rest of them! I don't have the doc myself, unfortunately, but I know the link or the name of it is on this site somewhere.

Pretty funny - Thomas Caleel (Wharton's director of admission) has his resume in that book :)

I don't have one for Chicago.

This is Tuck's Private Equity Club resume book:

Some of those resumes are pretty gnarly. Puts a good dose of reality into this whole process for me! Awesome post.
