We replaced our question about "greatest joy" with: "If you could choose one song that expresses who you are, what is it and why?" Why are we asking this question? It's not a test. We hope your answer will reveal something about what makes you who you are. A piece of advice -- your song doesn't have to be a popular or well-known song, or even a song with lyrics -- pick the song that has meaning for you and make sure we understand why.
Great! Thanks for the heads up... we'll get those updated along with the graphs in the near future

Haas application can be tiring if you don't plan it well. There could be 6 total essays. On the same note I was wondering what are people's thought about essay 5. Are you planning to reply both questions as one essays or separate?
Many of you might have received email about this but I wanted to share it with applicants who might not be aware of this. Haas is hosting some online "Area of Interest" events. In these events they will cover three areas: Consulting, Marketing, and Finance. Here are the dates and the link to the webinar.
No advance registration is required.

I was wondering how is everyone approaching the first essay question "If you could choose one song that expresses who you are, what is it and why? "
I asked few friends to give me one or two songs which remind them of me. So far some interesting choices emerged. Any thoughts or ideas from anyone on the forum?

I have to admit I was totally dreading this question because I am not really that musically-inclined. But I ended up choosing a song that I really enjoy that reminded me of an important time in my life. It was a good jumping off point to talk about a life experience and my personal qualities. I think the point is to have fun with it. So go with what feels good!

Thanks Machichi for some help there. I read your blog, interesting read indeed. I am also 2-3 days a week soccer player. I am originally from India so every song buzzing in my mind is generally a Bollywood number or some old Pink Floyd song so that doesn't help much. I will have to figure this one out soon. Although I have drafts of three other essays ready so I am not as stressed as I was last year.

I see you're a blogger yourself! You haven't posted in a bit--are you retaking the GMAT again?
I don't see anything wrong with a Pink Floyd or a Bollywood song. I mean, I guess the Bollywood might remind the adcom too acutely that you're an Indian applicant, but if it conjures up real, authentic, and interesting memories of your life, I don't see any problem with that. And well, Pink Floyd is a classic!
I thought about referencing one of my favorite songs, River by Joni Mitchell and how it was totally ruined for me when I heard it playing at a sex shop in Chicago. Haha, then I decided that fell into the category of "TMI" (too much information).
