MIT And Indians

I think the real issue isnt race but its career. MIT applicants come from engineering at a much greater rate than any of the other top schools...from what I remember its insanely biased towards engineers. The vast number of Indian applicants are engineers, so that alone makes it that much tougher. I think for all engineers MIT is very very difficult, not limited to Indians.

I would say this. Indians can and do get in. But as you go up the rankings, pedigree in work experience and of your UG school counts more and more. If you are a non-IIT UG, then you better have a grad degree from the US.

Most indians who get into the top schools are ABCDs who have better diversity than the swadeshi applicants and/or women applicants(since they enjoy lesser competition and because all schools are trying to attract more women) and/or non-tech applicants(say advertising, medicine, manufacturing etc).

This again doesnt mean Indian IT folks who dont fall under the above buckets dont get in at MIT. Some do, but chances are extremely slim.

Thanks everyone for responding. Yes I had checked the consulting club members, but there are two things I have noticed: 1. The event calender is not updated since 2006, it seems, so I dunno how updated other info are and 2. There are desi origin people, but I was wondering how many straight land up their from India.



Thanks Prasad. Now, I realize my mistake of not going for MS abroad ( A non-iit engineer here , did not go for MS even after having decent GRE). BTW, I may not be in the IT people ( did masters in economics after BE and now an econometrician employed in a consulting company). But I am afraid I was still clubbed with the engineer crowd, because in the feedback from Tuck they told me how my engineering degree was relevant and all but they never mentioned anything about my grad degree. Seems, my essays could not act as a differentiator.
