Well, as you kind of point out, there are definitely other factors that may affect the situation. It depends on what you view your problem to be. If you view your problem to be getting the interview in the first place (due to lack of network resources, strong differences on your resume, etc), then a stronger GMAT score could help you to stand out from your peers. If, however, you are getting the interview in the first place, then a charming smile and a few flattering words will probably get you further with the recruiter than a GMAT score that is 10 to 20 points higher or lower than your competition.
That being said, there are studies that show a person's quantitative GMAT score being linked to salary, and verbal GMAT scores to managerial status. Fun fact.
