Yale vs. Duke (should I withdraw from Duke WL?)

What I'm wondering is--for someone likely headed back to NYC for a finance job--would Yale or Duke provide for better job prospects? There are some clear trade-offs in other areas, but strictly in terms of NYC recruitment, which do you all feel has a stronger presence?

My dilemma is that I told Duke that I'd attend if admitted off the waitlist and, even though I'm genuinely torn between the two, I'd rather withdraw than to break my word. As such, I'd love some insight on whether Duke is worth this added commitment.

If it were me, I'd go to Yale, particularly if you want to get into Finance in NYC. As you mentioned, the proximity and access to companies in NYC is superior at Yale compared to being in North Carolina. Additionally, I think Yale has a slighty better reputation (see new US News and World Reports). If you really like Yale and are somewhat intent on going there, I would withdraw from Fuqua, considering you told them you would go there if accepted. You never know the adverse effects a burnt bridge can have..

Why would you wait on Duke? I assume you already put down your deposit. If I were in your situation, as much as I Love duke, I'd commit to Yale in a heartbeat.

You will get the same opportunities at Yale, and it's a great school! Go for it!

Logically, Yale SOM will provide better opportunity for NYC finance jobs. But I sense from your post, that Duke has an intangible draw for you. We make a lot of choices in our lives that don’t make logical sense, but they make us happy, sky diving for example.

Maybe you should think about it like this. If you were accepted at Duke and Yale straight up, which one would you pick?

You're right. I loved the campus, the people, the interview, and the area. Another reason is that my firm (large I-bank) doesn't recruit at Yale for Sales & Trading, but heavily recruits at Duke. I don't believe this is the case across the industry, but obviously it has some influence on me.

I would go with Yale. I believe it has the better reputation in NYC and the brand would be an asset in the long term when you try to land your 2nd & 3rd post MBA jobs.
