I overlooked E) :stupid

B) talks about only mental and physical whereas argument also talks about better organ work so E) is better

I would say E is way too generic. more than one purpose of what???

few realize the extent to which it is valuable to the mind (good enough to say mental activity??) and then it goes on to explain how the brain gets better.

Most people know that it is already a physical activity. The argument just explained that its good for the mind as well. Cant we say it Exercise is a mental as well as physical activity.

Re: CR-exercise [#permalink]
IMO E.

B and E both look fine, but b says that exercise is mental and physical activity.. which the passage does not state

OA is E,
Reason why B is wrong is that there is noting discussed about physical activity ,its just the author starts the argument to give a statement ,exercise is good for body ,then gives others +ve points of exercise....but does not prsent what activities are done mentally or physicallyto do exercise.

hence E is perfect

Although most people know that exercise is good for the body, few realize the extent to which it is valuable to the mind. The blood circulates more rapidly after physical exertion, thus allowing all of the body’s organs to operate more efficiently. This increased activity enables the brain to receive more oxygen, thereby creating a higher capacity for concentration.

The main point in the argument above is that

(A) the greater the amount of oxygen the brain receives, the better the brain functions.
Though this is true it is not the sole purpose of the stimulus. It is something that is inferred from the last sentence.
(B) exercise is a mental, as well as physical, activity.
No where in the stimulus does it mention the mental or physical demand exercise requires
(C) exercise helps the brain more than it does the rest of the body.
This is an extreme statement and no where in the stimulus does it state this.
(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.
Though this is possible it is not the main point of the article. Concentration is improved but it does not go into detail the extent of the concentration.
(E) exercise serves more than one purpose
The stimulus is about exercise and the word "although" in the stimulus suggests that even though it is good for the body as most people are aware it actually helps stimulate the mind too.

I chose E

Can anyone suggest how to approach this CR .I was confused between two options !!!

Re: CR-exercise [#permalink]
Answer E is the only logic answer.

A) is incorrect because from the information in the passage the stimulus of the brain isn't the onl purpose of the short passage

B) is wrong: is not relevant

C) is wrong: all body have benefits, not only brain

D) is wrong: is true, but concentration increase more with excercises but also by sleep, Omega 3 and so on........not only by fitness although is one of the better way

E) the passage show more than one purpose.

I think (D) uses wording that is too strong which i eliminated.

(D)"people can greatly improve"

Re: CR-exercise [#permalink]
Since it's a general idea que.. the approach has to be
first, eliminate specific choices, so A and D gone
second, C gone as there is no comparison given for effect of exercise on different parts of body
now you have B or E

B could be an ans but its not a logically correct statement, exercise itself is not a mental activity, it is a physical activity only that keeps your brain active, Hence serves the purpose of keeping brain more active

that is E, your final answer

is you like this post consider KUDOS.. Thanks

E. Between e and a e seems to cover the main point that is stated in the first line of the passage. excercise contributes to not only the physical body but also to mind and hence serves mote than one purpose. A - refers to only one fact stated in the argument.

Re: CR-exercise [#permalink]
E is the only one that really encapsulates the entire point of the argument.

(A) the greater the amount of oxygen the brain receives, the better the brain functions.
While the argument does in essence state this it ignores the points made about exercise.
(B) exercise is a mental, as well as physical, activity.
Exercise may help you mentally but its not necessarily a mental activity.
(C) exercise helps the brain more than it does the rest of the body.
At no point does it state that it helps one over the other.
(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.
This is true to the argument but it misses the point the exercising has physical benefits as well.
(E) exercise serves more than one purpose
Only one that meets all the points made. Therefore has to be the answer.

Too generic statement, also nothing about the functioning of brain is mentioned in the passage.
(B) exercise is a mental, as well as physical, activity.
The effect of exercise has an effect on brain.
(C) exercise helps the brain more than it does the rest of the body.
Out of scope.
(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.
Seems closer but in the passage it is said that the capacity of concentration increases and not the power. Also nothing about the improvement of concentration if the exercise is repeated is mentioned.
(E) exercise serves more than one purpose
Is the answer

Summarization: most people know exercise = good, but it is also "valuable" for the mind. (key word in " "s)

(A) the greater the amount of oxygen the brain receives, the better the brain functions.
we're talking about concentration potential... a small part of the brain function. it could have absolutely no bearing on other functions
(B) exercise is a mental, as well as physical, activity.
not really a mental activity... your brain is not getting a workout... it just increases it's potential
(C) exercise helps the brain more than it does the rest of the body.
false. it doesn't say anywhere that one is better than the other
(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.
greatly improve is an exageration here. greatly improve doesn't always mean "valuable"
(E) exercise serves more than one purpose
true. meets the criteria

(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.

D is a case of "too strong" answer IMO.
This means that the idea behind is correct, but is too extreme.

The idea of D is correct (people improve their concentration) but can we say that they do so "greatly"?
The text says "creating a higher capacity for concentration."

Hope this helps, let me know

the answer is E. the problem with "Inference Qs" is that we tend to make assumption rather than infer the information.

It is easy to handle this Cr if you consider this way
(A) the greater the amount of oxygen the brain receives, the better the brain functions.( this is wrong.this states that the improvement is limitless.this establishes a direct proportionality relation which is not correct)
(B) exercise is a mental, as well as physical, activity.(we know only the outcome of exercise)
(C) exercise helps the brain more than it does the rest of the body.( we dont know)
(D) people can greatly improve their powers of concentration by exercising more often.( greatly means more than 50%.We dont know)
(E) exercise serves more than one purpose( Balanced statement)
