recommenders' availability in the future is somewhat uncertain

This makes no sense to me. Why would you let a recommendation letter stand between you and what you want to pursue in life?

Rhyme, thanks for your reply and encouragement. However, I would like to know your opinion on my actual question, the one I wrote in bold. I paraphrase: If for some reason completely beyond my control, I decide not to apply to HKS after I previously told HBS I would (by including the "why the joint degree" essay in my HBS app), would that look really bad in the eyes of HBS, or would they still take me into the MBA program (assuming they liked me in the first place)?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, dont know. I don't know if the applications are considered together (e.g. your app would be considered incomplete) or if they are considered entirely separately in which case the only question is whether one talks to the other. Your guess is as good as mine. Certainly if you say you plan to apply and then don't, and they notice, thats going to raise a few questions about the seriousness of your candidacy.
