Age - 34 yrs.

Working as Assistant Vice President in US for one of the big firm. Overall I have close to 12 years of experience. Leading a technical team of 4-5 for last 2 years. Before that I was in several lead positions and worked as Team lead, Project Manager etc.

GMAT 650 (Q49 V30)

GPA: 3.5 Computer Science engineer

Extra Curricular : Actively participated in many College events and Alumni association. Participated in Volunteer services in my Company.

Target Programs : Looking for Executive MBA from Duke, Ross. Also looking for some suggestions. I am not interested in full time 2 year course, though one year Kellogg may be my wish. But with the current GMAT I doubt. Should I retake GMAT?

Post MBA- Interested in Strategic consultancy, and/or progress my carrier to Executive Management.

MY Questions are: What are my best fit Programs and what I can do to maximize, either GMAT wise or application wise.

Hi Brandy96,

Thanks for writing. Typically EMBA programs won’t weight the GMAT as heavily as a traditional two-year program would, as they are looking to bring in candidates who have already shown a lot of achievement in the workplace. If you think you can easily retake the GMAT and get a 680+ it could be worth a retake, but if you feel that you’re probably at your “natural” score right now then you’re better off investing the time on your essays.

Use your essays to demonstrate your work accomplishments and why an EMBA program is a good fit for you. Where possible, show how you use analytics and quant skills in your job to address any concerns that may exist about your quant skills based on your GMAT.

Thanks Brian for your input! I think if I invest some time I can make 680+, but for now my approach is to try with the current GMAT and see how it goes. What you think of my chances for 1 year program?

Hello brandy96, thanks for your question.

In terms of your GMAT question, it is my understanding that the GMAT does not weigh as heavily for executive MBA programs. They would put more weight on the experience you bring to bear.

Regarding strategy consulting, I don’t think an executive MBA is the best route to pull off a career change. You would probably be better off basing your “story” on progressing in your current company/industry.

In terms of fit, it is predicated on far more than just GMAT scores. Research programs that have strength in your area of interest. And, since you asked about maximizing your application: the more you can demonstrate a clear and direct link between your career needs and school resources (e.g., professors, classes, clubs, events, etc.), the more compelling a case you will make to an admissions committee.
