Re: Part of the proposed increase in state education spending is [#permalink]
This one is funny ..... I see now that the question is from 1000SC list but it has the semicolon missing in option D ..... without that semicolon, the sentence becomes a run-on and can not be the right answer ..... Those who are picking D without noticing this, please consult a grammar book :beat

I'm still .....

no need to take out the hammers :)

agreeed a semi-colon is missing, but there's no way you can justify any of the others. still think D is the least of all evils

Hey futuristic,
Are we assuming that the "student" in D is "students"?

Thanks/

since is used to depict a timeframe

For eg.,

He is missing since since 1991.

Here in A and C since usage is flawed

D and E are RUN ons

So B

assuming that there is a semi-colon and 'student' is actually 'students' I would go with D.

But,since "since" also means "because", the usage is correct, IMO.
I stand by C (without changing D). Otherwise D.

Re: Part of the proposed increase in state education spending is [#permalink]
Here is the correct question:

Part of the proposed increase in state education spending is due to higher enrollment, since the number of students in public schools have grown steadily since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, are at a record high.

(A) enrollment, since the number of students in public schools have grown steadily since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, are at
(B) enrollment, with a number of students in public schools growing steadily since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, reaching
(C) enrollment: since students in public schools have grown steadily in number since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, have reached
(D) enrollment: the number of students in public schools has grown steadily since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, has reached
(E) enrollment: students in public schools have grown steadily in number, since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, are at

BTW, the OA is D. No points to anyone, because the original posting was full of errors.

Thanks for correcting the errors.

Here is one reason I thought C wasn't right, please correct me if I am wrong.

( C ) enrollment, since students in public schools have grown steadily in number since the mid-1980’s and, at nearly 47 million, have reached

"students" and "have reached " do not agree. it is the number of students that have reached a record high, not the students.

You're right, its the number that has reached and NOT the students that have reached. Furthermore, the use of 'since' is dicey. 'since' is used to denote a point in time. 'because' is a better word to use, when providing a reason. Having said that, there are some sentences I've seen in which 'since' was in the correct answer and was used to mean 'because'. In short, always choose the least incorrect :)

Re: Part of the proposed increase in state education spending is [#permalink]
it seems that there is no any proper answer.

D seems to be the best, but "at 47 million, has reached"? the number reached sth, no use of "at".
