Hi there,
Thanks for your post and for sharing your background. Obviously the GMAT being unknown makes it more difficult to assess your competitiveness by tier of school, so be sure you really invest time and effort in your GMAT prep, but if it goes as well as you hope then I would think you would have a strong profile for reputable MBA programs in the US or UK, sure thing. The amount of leadership and impact made during your work experience will impact things too, but overall I like that you have had some team-lead experience; you've mentored and trained others; worked with others from international backgrounds and have a lot of international exposure; your grades are strong; you've been recognized/received awards; and you have interests outside of work as well. Of course applying as an Indian applicant with an engineering background is competitive, but if you focus on some of those strengths just mentioned, particularly those that may be less commonly-thought-of for engineering applicants, that will help. In terms of 'safe bets' it's tougher because all of the top say 30-40 schools are pretty competitive...
and again GMAT comes into play... but right now with a strong GMAT I'd say for 'safe bets' maybe roughly schools in the say 18-30 or so range (or below) (US News & World Report) for US.. safest being say 25-50 or so.... and for UK 'safe bets' might be Imperial or City or Manchester or Warwick... but you can always apply to some schools a bit higher ranked too and see what happens, really depends on what you are looking for!! Good luck and keep us posted!
