Hello -

I just recently took the GMAT and was hoping to receive some feedback on where I could be a match for business school. Specifically, do you think I have a chance at any of the top programs despite my low GPA? My information is listed below.

GMAT: 760
GPA: 3.2
Work Experience: 3 years at time of enrollment (currently a little over 2 years). All of my experience has been with startups, including time spent overseas launching what has now become a market leading ecommerce company. Also founded two companies (one while in college), but nothing highly successful.

Thanks for your help!

Congratulations on the excellent GMAT score; it goes a ways toward mitigating the low GPA.

As for how much weight this GPA will have, there are a few pertinent factors, e.g., if it trends up throughout your undergrad career, that’s positive and helps to mitigate it; if it trends down, that makes it more of a problem. If you have good grades in quant courses, that’s also positive. So the details of the GPA will have a bearing on how heavily it “weighs” in your application.

Generally, with lopsided numbers like that, your best bet is to apply to a range of schools and also a good number of schools if possible. That way, you have a better chance of “clicking” with an adcom that will see your real academic potential in your GMAT and be willing to overlook the GPA because they are thrilled with the application you present. That of course means you need to create a stellar application!

For reasonable reaches, if the GPA is relatively flat and your quant grades are OK to good, I’d suggest programs in the range of Darden, Michigan, Cornell, Duke, IMD. It you have an outstanding work track record perhaps also target schools at the level of LBS, NYU, MIT, Insead, Haas. For on-pars I’d suggest schools at the level of Anderson, Oxford/Said, Kenan-Flagler, Tepper.
