“The level of a country’s development can be best judged by the well-being of its two most vulnerable social groups—children and senior citizens.”
Explain what you think this quotation means and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with it. Develop your position with reasons and/or specific examples drawn from history, current events, or your own experience, observations, or reading.
YOUR RESPONSE:
I strongly support the auhtor's argument that the plight of children and senior citizens form the best supporting criteria on which any country's development can be judged. The author has correctly taken children and old age people as a criteria to judge as they fomr the backbone of any country in one way or the other.Following are some of the arguments that strongly suggests that author's claim is valid and true in its entirity.
Firstly,I beleive that education is a very important factor in a countries development. In a country where the children are getting well educated and which has an educated elder generation depicts that the country is highly developed or is in development state as they are able to provide the desired facilities to its citizens. For example according to a recent report published by United States on the education level of various countries the countries that are more developed shows a well educated children and eldery class as compared to the countries which are not developled or are in the process of developing.
Secondly, health care facilities is another criteria which shows how developded a nation is.The elderly class is the best class of people in a country to reflect the state of development of the health care facilities. Moreover the children mortality rates is also decressing in developed countries which favours the author's conclusion. For Example the developed nations like United States has a wonderful health care facilities as compared to developing countries like India where the average age of the citizens is declining due to inadequate healthcare facilities.
Furthermore, the children and senior citizens are the ones whose earning power is very less or nill in some cases. Thus their plight will correctly depict the state of the county's development as I believe they are the ones who are dependent on the government favours and benefits through various policies which decides their well being. For example countries like USA and US are able to provide their unemployed citizens various payments of soem fixed amount till the time they are unemployed which shows the country's ability to support well being of its citizens especially children and senior citizens.
In conclusion I feel that the author has correclty stated that the the children and senoir citizens shows the state of a country's development. He has taken into consideration the citizens that are not able to help themselves much and are dependent on the country's policies for support both monetry and health wise.In a county where the living standard of eldery and children is
commendable the country itself must be developed for sure. The more dismal is the state of these two starta of the society the less developed is the country as such.So I strongly believe in teh author's argument and its validity.
