Can anyone tell me if I can take a shot at Foster, Krannert, Katz or Smeal?

Hi,

You have fair chances of getting admit in B-Schools like University of Pittsburgh (Katz) and Purdue University (Kennart). But Foster and Smeal are stretch B-Schools for you. I would still suggest you to give them a shot.

If you would like to have a detailed profile evaluation of yours, you may PM your resume. You may also gauge your chances of getting admission in top business schools by trying Your Chances for B-School tool https://bit.ly/1rRCod5

Hope it was helpful.

Cheers,

Age: 27
Nationality: Indian

GMAT-580
Q-37
V-33
IR-7
AWA-5

Education:-
Bachelors in Advertising(Mass Media)
Top Arts College in India
GPA- Converted: 3.9

Work experience:-
1. Founder of a media production start up just out of college. 1 year
2. Associate at Microsoft- Engineering team. 3 years- Won numerous work awards and two promotions.
3. Community Service after quitting the earlier job- 4 months

Extra Curricular:-
1. NGO work- 1 year
2. International level sportsman- represented India at Afro-Asian Games and won various national awards

I am confused with the low GMAT score. I wanted to target the top b schools, but now want to settle for something. Plus I am not sure if I will be able to finance any of the top business schools.

Should I try giving GRE? Will this profile + GMAT give me a good shot at Foster, Smeal, Krannert or Katz.

Please suggest 4-5 schools I should target with this profile. I will probably give the GMAT again before R2 deadlines, but I do not expect a more than 50 point improvement. Please suggest accordingly.

Dude,
With a 580, as an Indian candidate, there is really only one reasonable course of action - retaking the GMAT. Don't apply with a 580. You'd be shooting yourself in the foot there. In fact don't apply with a GMAT lower than the best score you can get.

Have a look at a post I wrote here about Indians retaking the GMAT. It may help you think things through: https://bit.ly/B613Mgc

Best,

Thanks a lot Jon,

I am taking the GMAT again. However, I took a mock GRE today and scored 165 Q and 160 V.
I am not sure if I should go ahead with the GRE? How would that work?

You are better off with GMAT since you have taken it already but if you can get a much better GRE score then go for that. Your profile is pretty attractive so if I were you I would focus on raising your scores substantially before applying. It will be worth it in the long run.

Even if you have to delay the application, wouldn't you want to do the process justice if with a good GMAT and solid set of essays you got into a much better school. There is a lot that can be done with your profile so don't rush it especially if your score doesn't improve.

Well, that's pretty good! But be careful of mocks. They may not be that representative of what you would really get. Also, since you know the GMAT it may be easier for you to retake.

but the choice is yours. For schools that accept both tests (and this in now almost all Bschools) what they need form you is a GREAT score. On which test? Whichever you can get that great score on! :)

Be good,
Jon
