Here is how I would suggest you to proceed (assuming you want to take GMAT in the next 3-4 months):
1. Get
Official Guide 13 - this is a must have in any case. If you don't know the GMAT pattern, you should check out the various 'type of questions' on which you get tested. If you are aware of the question types, you will need this book for practice later.
2. Take a free practice test after you are comfortable with the various question types. Data Sufficiency and Critical Reasoning can be particularly daunting if you don't know the what is expected from you. Most of the prep test companies offer one free practice test. You can take one or two of those for diagnostic purposes.
Ours is freely available here:
https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/free-gm ... tice-test/We designed our practice tests to simulate the official GMAT as closely as possible, both in terms of question quality and how the computer-adaptive algorithm determines your ability level and chooses which questions you see.
3. Once this is done, you should list out your strengths and weaknesses. The tests will give you a detailed analysis of how you performed which will help you figure out the areas that need maximum work. That will help you decide what to do next - whether to self study through a curriculum, join a course or just take a test date (GMAT is a test of reasoning and a few people find that they are very well attuned to it without any work!)
4. Depending on what you choose to do and your timeline, make a study plan for yourself. Keep a practice test every 15 - 20 days to review your performance. Stick to the plan and tweak it as and when required.
