Profile Evaluation [#permalink] New post 12 Dec 2011, 19:49
Hi Bryant,

Can you please evaluate my profile and comment on school selection? Do you think I've a competitive application for the following schools?

Wharton, Booth, Tepper, Darden, and Stern.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Education:

GMAT 730 Q50 V38 AWA 5.5

Undergrad
Mechanical Engineering (with concentration in Mechatronics)
Gpa 3.22*
University: UOIT, Oshawa, Ontario.
Graduation: April 2010.

Masters in Engineering and Applied Science
UOIT.
Expected date of graduation: April 2012
GPA so far: 3.6

Work Experience:

Production Engineer
16 month internship at CAMI Automotive Inc. May 2008- August 2009

Actively assisted engineering team at CAMI Automotive Inc. in the launch of two new vehicles.
Lead the project on organization of tools and punches in stamping shop which helped company to save money and minimize downtime.

General Motors July 2010-March 2011
Production Supervisor

*Lead a group of 40 people.
*Started up a whole new shift and facilitated training for new employees, who were re-hired after 7 years.
*I was able to develop excellent working relationship with everyone working for me and my supervisor while I was at GM which helped me in accomplishing my goals and build up one of the most effective teams in Chassis, General Motors.
*Proposed and successfully implemented many changes in the jobs on line to minimize downtime and increase product, while improving quality.

BCA Construction

Project Manager/Estimator March 2011-Current

*Prepare mechanical estimates and supervise site projects.

Volunteer

First generation student mentor April 2011-Current

Assist first generation university students at UOIT to overcome hurdles they face.
Organizing meetings and events for first generation mentors.

Note 1: When I was working at CAMI Automotive and General Motors, my supervisors consistently recommended me for being a hard working, committed individual and for smart ideas I brought to improve things.

Low GPA in undergrad: Worked part time during first two years of school.

A+ in calculus and all other math related courses.

Tough Engineering program based on projects. It made it hard to score well because scoring was solely based on success or failure of the projects.

Lastly,I finished the curriculum designed for 8 semesters in only 7 semesters.

I'd actually write finishing my degree in 7 semesters and working part time for 2 years of my undergrad degree as my strengths.

Note 2
By Fall 2012, I'll have 26 months of full time experience. 9 Months at GM and 16 months at BCA construction Ltd as a project manager.

The reason I chose to do masters in engineering while working full time was that I wanted to figure out whether I'd like to advance in academics, get a doctorate. Over the past two years, while I was working full time and studying full time, I've realized that I want to stay and excel in my professional work rather than excelling in academics.

I've enjoyed my work as a Supervisor and as a project manager so far, so I'm looking for MBA programs that can prepare me for challenging leadership roles and programs that can help me move up the ladder in managerial roles.

Can you suggest me some programs and schools that fit my profile and requirements as well?

Thank you very much in advance.

I think your profile looks very strong, with solid academic credentials, a focused, progressively responsible career in an interesting field (interesting is good since it will help you stand out in the crowd), and leadership. Not many business school applicants with under 5 years experience will have 40 employees that they lead. Are you Canadian? If so, that could help provide some diversity in the application pool to your chosen schools, which receive far more applicants from the US. By the way, you might also look at Sloan, Kellogg, McCombs, Fuqua and Ross, all of whom have strong MGT operations faculty and curricula. Let us know if we can help you pull your applications together. Time is getting short for R2!

Thanks a bunch Bryant!

I'm an Indian-Canadian. I know schools look for diverse experience so will being an Indo-Canadian support my application in any way?

Do you think my explanation for low-gpa valid enough to gel with the ad com(s)?

Thanks.

I really wouldn't concern myself with the GPA--3+ in engineering needs no apology and indicating you worked during school on your resume should be enough to assuage their concerns if any. Plus your GMAT, again will innoculate suspicion that you can't handle the curriculum in business school. Oh, and yes, being Indo-Canadian can help differentiate you especially from the large number of Indian only applicants. :)
