I'm trying to get an idea of where I should apply and whether some reach schools are worth the time/effort/money to bother applying.
GMAT: 760
Quantitative: 49 (83%)
Verbal: 47 (99%)
Int. Reasoning: 8 (93%)
AWA: 4 (20%) - I did not prepare for the essay at all, as I got the impression it has little impact on your application. When it came up, I wasn't prepared for the time constraint (I'm a very slow writer) and didn't finish
GPA: 2.81 - First two years were terrible, I struggled with a close family member dying of brain cancer and had a hard time readjusting to school life after graduating early and taking a year off. GPA for the last two years was a 3.4, I was on the Dean's List
Degree: UNC Chapel Hill BA Economics, Public Policy (Double Major) (Transfered from NYU)
Prof. WE: 4 Years now, 5 by matriculation (mostly financial sales, some restaurant mgmt.)
Age: 25
*Dual-Citizen (U.S./Greece)
*Decent amount of volunteer/community org. work
Parents were both intelligence officers for DoD, and I have a lot of intl. travel experience of a non-professional nature - is this to my benefit at all?
I want to focus on Intl. Business programs that incorporate a good mix of management, tech and finance. I don't have a network or any real roots anywhere and would like to find a program that will allow me to continue traveling without having to look too hard for work. I also prefer to study on the west coast but would be willing to go elsewhere if most of the cost were covered. I expect cost to ultimately be the biggest deciding factor for me.
These are the schools I'm currently considering:
Reach: Haas, Stern, Booth
Range: Anderson, Marshall, McCombs (used to live in Austin, still have a lot of friends there)
Safety: Merage, Foster, UC Davis
To complicate things more, I'm considering applying through the Consortium (Haas, Anderson, Marshall, Stern, McCombs, maybe one more for good measure). I am 1/4 Cherokee and furthermore have several qualifying work/volunteer/life experiences that I think would qualify me. Do you think applying through the CGSM would be a good idea, and how would it affect my chances? How would you approach rating the schools?
I'd really appreciate some outside perspective, I know the GMAT is decent but am worried about the low GPA and maybe weak work experience. I have also traveled quite a bit since undergrad (living in my 4th state in 5 years), so I'm worried about the impression my jumpy job history (longest tenure was 2 yrs., though I have worked multiple jobs at once several times) might leave on reviewers. Would I have a chance with any of the reaches listed? What odds might I have with a scholarship or fellowship with any of the schools mentioned? I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!
