Hello,

1) Brief description of your full-time work experience. What do you do?
I've been working for 3.5 yrs at a Manufacturing company (Mexico) that makes engine parts for most of the car companies. I'm a process engineer (been promoted twice) and I'm responsible for the quality of the products and lead a team of around 30 people (not as a boss but as team leader). Last year we made a reduction of 34% on defects.

2) Your GMAT: 710 (48Q 40V)

3) College info:

Industrial Engineer from Tec de Monterrey (one of the best schools in Mexico). Graduated in 2010. GPA 3.6 (88/100) did an Internship in France for 6 months studying International Business.

4) Significant college and post-college extra-curricular activities or community service, especially leadership experience.
Coordinator at the Industrial Congress (2000 assistants) which included leading a team of 10 people to plan logistics for the activities and improving the content.
Vicepresident of Industrial Engineer Student Government(leading around 50 coordinators), created different events like a social event to promote reading at primary schools, which included a closing party on children day with 10 000 children; Industrial Congress, Industrial Forum, and other activities. Final profit was 100 thousand usd for scholarships and housing of talented students with low resources.

5) Important certifications: None

6) Your target programs: I'm thinking on Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Cornell and Georgetown, but I may change one or two.

7) When you plan to apply? R1 2014-15

8) Your post-MBA goal: Carreer change, work on a big company on a management/finance position for a few years, then start my own business back in Mexico.

Thank you very much!!

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. Based on the info you have shared here, I would say you have the following strengths:

-some team lead experience (valuable, especially if you can share stories/examples and what you've learned from it etc)
-analytical and technical skills; project management skills
-international experience
-GPA
-the experience organizing the fundraising event shows initiative, determination and giving back to the community
-less common nationality

The following are challenges you may face:

-slightly less than average work experience; perhaps not as much leadership and impact (as described here) compared with some applicants to top programs
-your goals currently could be strengthened; try to do some further research and thinking to really be able to describe the WHY behind the MBA; the short and long term career goals; how your past relates to those goals, etc
-GMAT is somewhat neutral at this point
-biggest challenge may just be standing out as there are a lot of engineering applicants; think about how you can be remembered; what makes you unique, etc. Be prepared to share who you are as a person/get personal ;) in those essays.

You have a solid profile, but I must say the schools you've mentioned will likely be pretty decent 'reaches'. I'd suggest focusing more on schools outside the top 15 or so for best chances. Georgetown on your list is more reasonable. Stanford, fyi, is one of the most selective in the world, not helped by the fact that their class size is much smaller than Harvard's and other top programs, fyi, so statistically it's extremely tough to get into.

Keep us posted on questions and your decisions, wishing you the best!
