Do you have an explanation for this.
I am reading the Manhattan gmat guide right now. It says that use "I" when the pronounce is part of the subject, and "me" when the pronounce is part of the object.
If A is the answer, I am thoroughly confuse as which is the subject, and which is the object (or neither).
What if the phrase is:
He/him told them that the thief was I/me? (I suppose it should be "He told them that I was the thief?", but for the sake of discussion....)
Follow up:
I searched the forum, and found many posts regarding this question, but it seems unanimous that this is a JUNK question from barron.
This post has the OA as B http://www.gmatclub.com/forum/t38643

but meaning except is always followed by the objective pronoun, and the copula was takes the subjective I.

thief was I - wrong
C , D , E left
E - "that" is missin
Between C & D
-------------------------------
only he could have done this
no one but him could have done this
-------------------------------
D sounds best

I choose C
C seems right to me since 'he' is the subject & so cannot be in object form 'him' & 'I' should be in form 'me' since it is the object.

great discussion.. i think the answer is B
No one but he could have told them that the thief was I.
I think both needs to be the subject not the object of the sentence... wish we had an OA to confirm

Ridiculous question. The ambiguity of the subject is so much in the sentence as stated that it allows for there to be several different answer, just depending on how you interpret it.
I like C. Simply but, who said what is the subject. That is 'he'. What they were told is not the subject. Me works.

C
first one is 'he' because we're dealing with a subjective pronoun
second one is them because it's an objective pronoun
and the last one is 'me' because it's an objective pronoun
