GMAT Gurus plz help!!! I know the answer but not able to figure out the reason for choosing that particular option :( In case it's already posted b4, plz point me to tht...

 A survey by National Council of churches showed that in 1986 there were 20736 female ministers almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy, twice as much as 1977..

A. twice as much as 1977
B. twice as many as as 1977
C. double what it was in 1977
D. double the figure for 1977
E. a number double that of 1977's

If you dont like OG explaination, let see

1. misnisters, so "as much as" is wrong, A out
2. "ministers" are compared to "1997", the comparison is not complete, B out
3. "it" has no reference, C out
4. "that of" should be "those of"

D remains.

In E a number could be referring to 9%, its the # of ministers which are double not the % number.

Thanks ,

I think E is wrong because it says 1977's. It does not need to be those. a number is singular. It may sound implicit that we are comparing it to the number in 1977.

double the figure for 1977 really sounds awkward to me. But seems to be the best of the lot.

Re: SC - OG-9.6 Q4 [#permalink]
While digging some old posts I reached here. My approach for question-

I guess what GMAT test makers did here, put some nonessential clause and then put incorrect comparison. If we remove that nonessential clause(almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy) then D is the best comparison for rest of the sentence. Now see all choices-

A- as much as, wrong as ministers are person(countable noun)
B- as many as, wrong as we are comparing noun with year.
C-it has no referent.
D-Correct.
E- a number, is not needed, and 1977's and that of both refers to numbers(so error of precision). If this is written as..
a number double that of 1977 or
a number double of 1977's, then I guess either of them are correct.

Let me know guys, if I am thinking too much or thats the way it is.

A, B, E change the meaning. In C, it has no reference. So D is the correct Ans.
