Should I mention professors' names in SOP? [#permalink] New post 15 Oct 2008, 06:38
I'm during the process of preparing all application stuff for PhD starting in fall 2009 (Business), but still struggled with SOP. I saw some examples of SOP that clearly mentioned the professors (2-3 names) whom they want to work with, but some SOP did not mention. In case that I did not contact any of the professors before, should I mention their names by just looking into their research interests?

sorry if this reply is late, but: it may vary by program, but i'd say yes.. mention their names, and also contact the profs just to at least see if they're willing to take on new students! that way you seem more focused and seem like you know more about what your research interests are and how that matches with faculty from that school you'll be working with

Yeah, I mention professors in every one of my SOPs. I'll let you know if it's a good idea once I find out if I get in anywhere.

I had the same question. What if the professors I mentioned in my SOP are not looking for Ph.D. students or are not in the admission committee? Should I mention some names even though I have never contacted them before?

Though I mentioned professors by name, I think I sort of played it safe by saying that they were simply examples of faculty with similar interests, not that I am dead-set on being their students.

For the life of me, I cannot think of how else to make the case that any particular program is better than any other. I mean, they want us to explain in our SOPs why we feel a "fit" with their program, so what else could we say? That the weather is nice?
