To answer te question correctly, IMO, the point in not "the difference between 3 times as much as and 3 times more than".
We have to mantain the parallelism in the structure. The subject is the Dancing Doll line, and it must be compared to other "lines"; the passage says "40% more than" and we have to mantain that structure using "3 times more than" (and not 3 times as much for example) . Only E keeps these conditions intact. IMO E

Hi I think it is not about the maintaining the structure . When multiplication factor (like 3 times ) is used then it cannot be more than. Please make sure the OA is right and it is from a valid source.

Expert's post
Three times as much as means three times x, where x is the trait of the first item or in other words 300 per cent
Three times more than means, 1x+3x, summing up to 4x or 400 percent.

Of course this is not what the text wants to assert. Its focus is on whether 40% more than is parallel to three times as much as. IMO, 40% more than is logically as parallel to as three times as much as. While the former is called comparative degree, the latter is called positive degree. Between logic and structure parallelism, logic is more paramount (at least in this context). This is my gut feeling.

In kaplan the explanation is............
The word than preceding the underlined portion of the sentence tells us that the underlined portion is a comparison.Items compared must be parallel to each other, both as items and grammatically. Here, the money the Dancing Doll(DD) line received from sales is compared to that received by the Teeny Tiny Trucks)TT and Basic Blocks (BB)lines,so all three quantities should be started the same way.
Only the mane of the toy line and the amount should change from item to item, and the verb sold does not need to be repeated for each item.

(A)includes did with the TT sales but no verb with the BB sales, these forms are not parallel
(B)is not parallel because it uses did with TT sales and were with BB sales
(C)includes sold withTT sales, but no additional verb with BB,so it can also be eliminated
(D)uses Basic Blocks` sales, which is not parallel to Dancing Dolls line and Tenny Tine line
(E)eliminates the verbs and make the comparison more parallel by using more than for one item and nearly three times as much as for other. It`s the correct answer.
