Hi sasha40612,
Thanks for posting your query here.
Here is the solution for this one:
Meaning Analysis:
The sentence talks about the health benefits of tea that have been the subject of much research. The brewed leaves of Camellia sinesis probably reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke apart from preventing and inhibiting some forms of cancer.
Error Analysis:
1) Singular pronoun “its” does not agree in number with plural antecedent “the brewed leaves of Camellia sinesis”. 2) Use of preposition “for” after “possibilities” is unidiomatic. We can say either “possibilities that…” or “possibilities of…”. 3) The phrase “preventing and inhibiting” suggests that the brewed leaves prevent and inhibit together. It does not quite make sense. The leaves either prevent or inhibit some forms of cancer.
PoE:
A. in addition to its possibilities for preventing and inhibiting: Incorrect for the reasons stated above.
B. in addition to its possibilities to prevent or inhibit: Incorrect: This choice repeats the pronoun and the idiom errors of Choice A.
C. besides the possibility that it prevents and inhibits: Incorrect: This choice repeats the pronoun error of Choice A.
D. besides the possible preventing and inhibiting of: Incorrect: i. The phrase “possible preventing and inhibiting” is a little awkward. ii. Use of “and” in the same phrase makes no sense.
E. besides possibly preventing or inhibiting: Correct.
Hope this helps. Thanks. SJ
