The town of Stavanger, Norway, was quiet and peaceful until the
early 1960's, when Stavanger became Norway's center for offshore oil
exploration. Between then and now, violent crime and vandalism in
Stavanger have greatly increased. Cearly, these social problems are
among the results of Stavanger's oil boom.
Which of the following , if it occurred between the early 1960's and
now, give the strongest support to the argument above?
(A) The people of Stavanger rarely regret that their town was chosen
to be Norway's center for offshore oil exploration.
(B) Norwegian sociologists expressed grave concern about the increase
in violent crime and vandalism in stavanger.
(C) Violent crime and vandalism have remained low in Norwegian towns
that had no oil boom.
(D) Nonviolent crime, drug addiction, and divorce in Stavanger
increased approximately as much as violent crime and vandalism did.
(E) The oil boom necessitated the building of wider roads for the
increased traffic in Stavanger.

Just to be different, I go with E

C) what if those other smaller towns had no oil boom but the crime rates have remained low for other reasons than not having an oil boom? ie better police force, judicial system. I don't think that saying other towns being X justifies and explains why Stavanger is not X

Yeah what the heck I will choose E, but for a different reason.

Hypothetically assume Stavanger and other towns in Norway had no oil boom and also there was no violence. What can we infer here. The people must be peace loving folks or there was a great judicial system and local people were afraid of violating that system.

Now Oil boom occurs and still those people live there and no external people visit that place. What do you expect. Obviously the same result.

Since violence increased there must be some external factor. Only people can be external factor. Definitely outsiders came to that town and created a mess. Only E creates a possibility for external people to come into the town.

I have a problem with Batliwala's avtar (though it is perfect for his name) because it distracts me a lot

What a nice little story. I will also back you up because opening sentence says that the city was a "quiet and peaceful" one. Conclusion says that it's oil that brought about all that violence. Only way to link the premise and conclusion is a bridge argument. E says that the oil boom brought about the building of roads and an increase in traffic. This obviously disturbed the "quietness and peacefulness" of the city and thus the reason for the increase in violence

answer given is C. sorry paul and anandnk. I liked the way you guys put on your thinking caps and debate. But, C definitely supports the argument strongly.

I have a problem with anandnk's avtar (though it is perfect for his name???) because he looks more like a ???? and that distracts me too.

anandnk, I will change my avatar if your is whining over it (just joking)

Thank you Batli for posting all these nice CR in the last couple of days. They sure are good practice. Keep it up! :btw I still think that justifying why something is not happening in one place by relating it to another place is somewhat weak. It does not directly attack the argument at hand. Therefore, I still believe E is better. I stubbornly stick to E :beat

Hi Batliwala,

May be you can send a mail to Praetorian and see what happenend.

What is the OA.
