Top Ranking Finance Program B-Schools

I'd like to know about other excellent schools for finance. I review the list for Finance at U.S. News, but I don't like any of those schools. I want something I can aspire to. I believe the list for U.S. News is longer... but they don't show that in the magazine... that's NOT NICE!!! I think the lists should be as long as possible.... maybe like the first 20 schools in each area. We have different skill sets. From what I gather the top Finance schools would probably only accept those students that are already working in the field -- they are just punching their card -- at the credentials booth. Those would be those top schools you listed. But what about career-switchers... is our blood not red? Anyways... I'd like to know the rest of the list U.S. News puts somewhere online... could someone share that info -- rhc72e@yahoo.com. Say I am your brother and you are helping me out. I already bought the magazine and felt cheated. Same goes with BusinessWeek they only show the top ten and those top ten are always nearly the same names!!!!!!

There are many schools that are strong in finance beyond those listed by US News. Do you have specific schools or firms in mind?

I am applying to Indiana and Rochester, but I 'd like to know about other programs just in case. I live in California but I can go out of state. How about Washington USTL?

I would also consider Rice, Texas, and Georgetown.

This is great source of info. How do schools that have offer strong Finance programs look at the breakdown of Quant and Verbal from GMAT?

Here is my data:

GMAT Ist attempt: Q: 44(76%) V:38(86%) overall (90%)
GMAT second attempt: Q: 48 (86%) Verbal: 29 (51%)

Education:
B.S. in EE( from a govt. public Indian U, 3.7/4.0)
M.S in EE(Oakland U, MI) 3.76/4.0
M.S in Computer Engg (U of Minnesota, MN) 3.72/4.0

(My high school grades are perfect too)

Work Experience: Software Engineer for 13 years, currently lead/manager for the last 3 mo., Worked for 6 tech companies including IBM.

Sex: Female

I am wondering if my first score with quant 44 is good enough. I would rather not take GMAT again, I am just too busy with my job. I will have to quit my job to take GMAT again. Most people claim that they study 20 hrs. on the forum. I was lucky to have 2 hrs.

I am interested in Chicago, Kellog, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell and MIT.

I would like to know how you think Rice and SMU stack up for finance careers in Texas. Obviously not strong outside of Texas, but both schools seem to have strong reputations in-state, particularly in their respective cities. My preliminary thinking is that Rice has more upside considering the strength of their undergraduate program and how seriously they've been trying to ramp up their reputation. Your thoughts are appreciated!

I agree with you Rice and SMU are strong choices, especially for finance positions in Texas. Likewise, I give the advantage to Rice. I think these two schools have been sort of "stealth" schools so far on GMAT Club so I am glad to see more interest in them.

If I can ask you to follow up on that...

I want to continue in the finance arena (restructurings, private equity) in Texas, although not sure whether in energy in Houston or in diversified middle-market companies in Dallas. I'm in at SMU with a good scholarship and in at Rice with a great scholarship (75%). In at UT as well, although haven't heard about and don't expect any scholarships. I really do love the atmospheres of Rice and SMU. UT, however, has such great resources and obviously more prestige (rankings, alumni, etc). I'm 90% sure I should proceed to UT, regardless of scholarship, but a part of me finds it hard to let go of SMU and Rice. Maybe it's only because I worked so hard studying for GMAT and working on applications in order to open doors, and I'm finding it hard to start closing doors already. I would love your thoughts, Hjort. Thank You!

I would take UT over Rice and SMU; its advantages will pay off in the long run.
