Easy 320 is the answer.

3/4 ( x/2) = 120
x = 120 * 8 /3 = 320.

During a car trip, Maria stopped to rest after she traveled 1/2 of the total distance to her destination. she stopped again after she traveled 1/4 of the distance remaining between her first stop and her destination, and then she drove the remaining 120 miles to her detination. What was the total distance, in miles from Maria's starting point to her destination?

A. 280
B. 320

1x/2 + (1/4)(1x/2) = 5x/8 = total distance traveled so far
remaining distance = 3x/8 = 120 => x = 320 kms

Remaining distance after second stop = 3/4 *(x/2) = 120

Solving for X = 320

Option B.

We can let n = total distance and create the equation:

n/2 + 1/4(n/2) + 120 = n

n/2 + n/8 + 120 = n

Multiplying by 8 we have:

4n + n + 960 = 8n

960 = 3n

320 = n

Using answer choices:

Start with B = 320 miles

Total distance = 320 miles

Half distance = 160 miles

Remaining = 160 miles

1/4th of 160 = 40 miles

160 + 40 = 200 miles

Remaining final distance = 120 miles -----> perfect match

Hence (B)

Re: During a car trip, Maria stopped to rest after she traveled 1/2 of the [#permalink]
Let total distance = D miles.

Then, the total distance is given by the sum of the three intermediate distances travelled = (D/2) + (D/8) + (3D/8)

We are told that the last intermediate distance travelled is equal to 120 miles.

3D/8 = 120 or, D = 320 miles

ANSWER: (B)

Note: We know that the total distance will be a multiple of 8 (= 2*4). So we can eliminate answer choices (A), (C) and (D). If pressed for time, we can just choose one of the two remaining answer choices and use the "plug-in" method to arrive at the correct answer (B).
