Re: About 75% of the people that use computer keyboards suffer from wrist [#permalink]
Expert Reply
About 75% of the people that use computer keyboards suffer from wrist pains caused by those keyboards. Therefore, about 75% of the keyboard models on the market need to be replaced by those with designs more suited to human use.

The argument is flawed primarily because the author:
The author concludes that since 75 percent of the people that use computer keyboards have wrist pain, 75 percent of the keyboards should be replaced. This logic is reasonable only if all the wrist pain sufferers used the same keyboard model. Imagine 100 computer keyboard users, 75 of which had wrist pain. If there were a different keyboard model for each of these 75 people, or even just 5 different models, it would make no sense to replace 75 percent of the keyboards.

A) forms a conclusion based upon one premise alone
not why the argument is primarily flawed
B) does not take into account the fact that some people are more prone to wrist pains than others
no mention of the keyboard
C) confuses an item of a certain product with a model of the product
D) ignores the fact that some people have used computer keyboards for much longer than others
We're concerned with the keyboard itself, rather than its use.
E) has not taken into consideration the effect that other strenuous activities may have on a person's fingers
other strenuous activities are out of scope

I think this question is already being discussed at below thread
about-75-of-the-people-that-use-computer-keyboards-suffer-from-wrist-199880.html

It will be good idea to avoid multiple thread of same question. + it will save your investment of time

I don't agree with the explanations for D.
what if from 5 minutes of usage - you don't get wrist pain, but from 90 minutes - you get?
clearly - people who use more the computer will get "tired"...I think it's a bad question for practice.

Prethinking: 75% have wrist pain from keyboard models. But it's not sensible to replace 75% of the models ( how do we know which models caused the wrist pains which ones didn't ! ) . So replacing along this line won't solve our problem.

Clearly it's option C which points out this flaw that 75% items cause the pain has been confused with 75% of the models cause pain. Maybe there are 100 models available and only 2 models widely used by everyone cause the wrist pains ( maybe they are older models ). Replacing 75% brand doesn't solve the problem replacing those that cause the pain solves the problem

Please help to understand reasoning for this question. Thanks :-D
