Hi Guys,
i have been preparing for a Gmat since lat 2.5 months..i must say this club is one of the most fantastic things i came across for Gmat.. Kudos!! to all of you and few ppl i really admire most..( i guess, its a big list but i will definitely keep Bunuel and walker on top for there amazing understanding on quants..) i usually don't post much coz i find most of my queries using search and i believe there is no point spamming the forum with creating topics without searching.
I guess i have stuck a roadblock here..was feeling down and thought of getting guidance of all the members, may be can understand the gap in my preparation..:D
here is my story..
i gave CAT back in 2004-5 which is an indian version of gmat and never bothered about studying for such brutal test until recently i thought of doing some premium coarse to enhance my career growth. so i did had an idea what i am upto..
Quants have always been my weakness(unlike most other Indians here:)) so i decided to take the bull by its horns and focused on quants initially
here is the list of material i used and response:
MGmat all 8 guides, i must say explanations and concepts are very solid. book helped me to understand basics i was always afraid off.
Jeff's Gmat hack: did the book almost twice: in 1st round i did all the questions in timed mode(including the hard problem set and the practice problem set, but i left out on initial drill ones which i found too easy) then i marked the ones i did wrong and created the log for them and again attempted those very questions in timed mode. i ill say my comfort level was almost85-90% with the book. i was able to solve most of problems 2nd time barring few inequality specially MOD| | ones, which i still struggle and the reason i suppose is not coz i cannot understand the basics like |x| can be -x or +x but coz in most of DS questions i need time to try 3-4 values i.e -1 ,0 or <1 to come out with the answer. and i simply struggle under the clock pressure. something i need you guys to help me on. but apart from that felt reasonably comfortable with the level of questions.
OG quantitative review 1st edition(the green book but not the latest edition, an old one): it was almost a walk in the park after gmat hack, with all the questions i attempted in time mode i had a success of almost 75-80% with little struggle on last 40-50 problems. apart from the silly mistakes which i did in few questions( i literally banged my head on table for few..:D) so i again filtered a list of question i did wrong and again went after those after understanding the explanations to make sure concepts are ossified in my brain.
English:
Although English is not my native language but i don't really see a lot of challenge in English, I did my entire schooling in English medium and had always been an avid reader specially reading dry subjects like psychology or philosophy (love Robert Pirsig for boks like zen and the art of motorcycling and Lila). but when it comes to Gmat its a different ball game altogether.
so i geared up for the challenge, here is brief of my English preparation:
CR: did CR bible, i guess book really is a bible in explaining all the question types by dividing them in various families and good number of practice questions on corresponding topics.
RC: did few passages from
OG verbal review but nothing much..really planning to do some practice on RC99. i think should be enough to help me keep my head over the water on RC problems..what do you say ppl..?
SC: read Aristotle SC bible, i think book is very concise and just bang on target to make u understand all the rules. did powerscore SC bible, again a wonderful book and really helped me with topic wise problems.
well studying all this for past 2.5 months thought of taking a plunge on the tests, and am very disappointed with my scores so far.
1st
MGmat: I gave this 1.5 months before around starting of my preparations score was 510:
2nd
MGmat i gave today and i scored 570 with 34 in quants and 37 in verbal: was disappointed with my verbal score as i managed to score 78%tile but was fine with my progress as i gave hardly 15 days out of my last 2.5 months working on preparations to verbal.
i strongly feel barring few mistakes i can top up to 80-85%tile range with 1 week or 2 of verbal preparation.
I am planning to read SC and CR bible for 2nd time and i think it will hopefully be enough to take me there and thereon i aim for 90%tile and above by practicing on
OG both verbal(blue one) and official
OG 12. please guys need you suggestions here.
Quants: here is a major problem: I gave few Gmat tests here is the percentage of questions i got right:
Diagnostic test: 58%
Gmat club m25: got around 20 correct out of 37
Quants set 1 got 22 out of 37 right
Quants set 2: got 23 of 37 right
gave all test in timed mode(though did resorted to cheating in 2-3 questions by pausing some time with review mode just to buy some extra time) i really hate myself for that.
now i have started to seriouslly feel down as dispite of studying regularly atleast for 2 hrs and majority of my time devoted on quants I am hitting a road block dont understand y am i scoring so low on quants.
did some introspection and found that most of problems type i get stuck at are where i have to come up with some equation for eg diagnostic test ques no 33 and 27 or i get stuck on DS where i have to find a solution with trying 2-3 values and with inequality in DS i surely struggle. I am worried now, i understand that i have to take these questions as learning opportunities as per Mr walker, but all these scores make me feel a pighead and was thinking that what what if i manage to get same performance on D day..guys i need you to give me some inputs, i can PM you the list of questions i faltered upon for
Gmat club tests may be you can help me analyze my problem and suggest me some workarounds.
what scores you guys use to get on these club tests and what you got on the D day..? may be it will make me undertand how much i have to work from here on to bridge the gap.
I have a 1.5 months to go for a D day. so will need to fill in the gap as quickly as possible and not to mention i still have to improve my verbal section too..but quants section always kills me and takes most of my time, may be i am still afraid of my past quants performance..reallly need you all to help me understand and collate all the pieces of this quants puzzle.
Its Do or Die...
