Thanks for the reply BB.

The only reason I'm asking is because I've heard a lot of different versions regarding the documents they might ask for and I just want to make sure that I have everything in order right away.

Also what kind of background check do they undertake? Is it advisable to hire a consultant beforehand to help you with all this? I've read stories of people being harassed by background checking agencies which often make it a hellish experience for the applicant and I have no intention of going through all of that.

Granted, if you are asking about a school in Saudi Arabia or in Russia - it is quite possible that one of those countries may need your blood sample or a detailed background check (I am not sure about some of the off-the-beaten path locations). My comments were referring to the US Schools.

P.S. Perhaps I am missing something - why would a background check company contact the applicant? What is there to verify with them? Most of the verification happens with your employers and other references. Again, this may be different in international situations but in the US with thousands of people going to the MBA, it is a pretty well-oiled machine. I would encourage you to post any references to issues with background checks or other items, however. It will be helpful to others.
