Re: blackberry [#permalink]
Exchange is the microsoft (I think - Outlook uses it anyway) mail server technology.

As for the other thing, I have no idea. I am resisting a blackberry until someone forces one into my hand, or necessity prevails (certain tri-state places don't get certain networks - it will be a while before that becomes a stress point on my life I expect!)

I wonder how many years I can go without a blackberry or similar...

Yeah, that's right. Microsoft Exchange. It's part of their server software, and most big companies use it (I guess there are a few Lotus Notes holdouts). So anyhow, exchange is the email system, and if your school uses it, a Windows Mobile device will interface directly with the server. For me, that means I receive emails wirelessly on my handheld before they pop up on my computer, even if I'm hard-plugged into the system at school. It also means that if I send or respond to an email on my handheld, it's reflected on my computer as well. If I delete a message in one place, it's gone from the other - so you don't have to repeat tasks and keep track of two separate things.

Coordinating email is really useful, especially if you're away from school (say for recruiting) for a few days. The other thing is that you can coordinate your calendar (Outlook) with your computer as well as any school calendars. So, we have a master calender here that lists all the events - I can have those automatically synced with my handheld. This helps a lot when you are, for example, running around New York meeting with 15 firms in 4 days and there are last-minute changes.

Oz,

Check out this page for windows-based smartphones.
https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/ ... fault.mspx
Variants of each model are available on different carriers e.g. Motorola Q9 is Q9c on Sprint, Q Global on AT&T and so on.
FYI, Sprint currently has an awesome deal for $30 including 500 mins & unlimited data.

Are you sure? That is a rediculously good deal. Where do you see it?

What about the Palm Cento?

It's called the Sprint SERO plan. Started as an employee only plan but is now open to everyone. They have the Centro as well as other PDA phones through this deal. Of course, 2-yr contract is needed.

Re: blackberry [#permalink]
Palm OS is effectively licensed from Access (Japanese company).

Q4 2007 figures :-

Symbian had a 65% share of worldwide converged device shipments, ahead of Microsoft on 12% and RIM on 11%. By region, Symbian led in APAC and EMEA with 85% and 80% shares respectively, while in North America RIM was the clear leader on 42%, ahead of Apple on 27% and Microsoft at 21%.

Palm OS isn't even on the radar

I will stay with the iPhone, it does everything a blackberry does (one can argue about the type speed though) and the other applications are just amazing, and I'll not have to carry an iPhone together.

I've already syncronized mine with my iMAC and it's working perfectly, I'm in Love...

Bumpin' an old thread. I'm deciding on either a Blackberry Curve or 8830 for Manhattan. Probably going to go with the Sprint Simply Everything Plan. Anyone have any suggestions/comments on Sprint coverage in New York City?

I don't know much about Sprint, but I have Verizon and I get service everywhere above ground, and even below ground when the 1 pulls into 72nd street (if I have a message waiting, it never fails to come through at that stop).

Sprint's simply everything plan is an amazing deal... don't get the curve that's old as hell. i don't believe the 8900 is available on the sprint and the 8300 series is sooo old. If you're going with sprint get the PALM PRE. It's truly amazing.

I'm going to get a new phone wiht AT&T soon and can't decide whether or not I should splurge on a blackberry bold now or wait until the blackberry onyx comes out later this year. sigh
