Argument : Even though some animals are carnivorous, they still depend on plants. This dependency is mutual. Author then explains how plants are dependent on animals and how animals are on plants.

Ques : Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main conclusion of the journalist’s argument?

Lets analyse the options now :
(A) The photosynthetic activity of plants is necessary for animal life, but animal life is also necessary for the occurrence of photosynthesis in plants. - Incorrect : only a part of the argument and also it does not mention that animal is necessary for the occurrence of photosynthesis.

(B) Some purely carnivorous animals would not survive without plants. - Incorrect : Not the conclusion and not the inferred meaning. The statement says that "none will survive without plants."

(C) The chemical composition of Earth and its atmosphere depends, at least to some extent, one the existence and activities of the animals that populate Earth. - Incorrect : The argeument does not mention anything about the chemical composition of Earth or its atmosphere.

(D) Human activity is part of what prevents plants from depleting the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere on which plants and animals alike depends. - Incorrect : Plants do not deplete oxygen as per the arguement.

(E) Just as animals are dependent on plants for their survival, plants are dependent on animals for theirs. - Correct : Very much inline with the complete argument and also what we concluded before going through options.

IMO E. Took 1 minute to solve and is pretty straight forward.

(A) The photosynthetic activity of plants is necessary for animal life, but animal life is also necessary for the occurrence of photosynthesis in plants. : Yes the passage talks about this, but the conclusion is not this. It is one example to make the conclusion

(B) Some purely carnivorous animals would not survive without plants.: This is just one part of the story where animals are dependent on plants. So it is wrong

(C) The chemical composition of Earth and its atmosphere depends, at least to some extent, one the existence and activities of the animals that populate Earth. This is absurd at best. The passage never mentions the chemical composition of Earth

(D) Human activity is part of what prevents plants from depleting the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere on which plants and animals alike depends. Humans are not a part of this discussion, except the one talking about it!

(E) Just as animals are dependent on plants for their survival, plants are dependent on animals for theirs. This is correct. This lists the inter-dependency that exists between plants and animals.

Re: Journalist: Obviously, though some animals are purely carnivorous, non [#permalink]
Journalist: Obviously, though some animals are purely carnivorous, none would survive without plants. But eh dependence is mutual. Many plant species would never have come to be had there been no animals to pollinate, fertilize, and broadcast their seeds. Also, plants’ photosynthetic activity would deplete the carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere were it not constantly being replenished by the exhalation of animals, engine fumes, and smoke from fires, many set by human beings.

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main conclusion of the journalist’s argument?

Plants use CO2 which is exhaled by animals, hence they make a perfect balance. There is no point of human intervention that impacts the plants and animal cycle.

A -> Photosynthesis is important for plants and not animals. NO
B -> This is a premise and not conclusion NO
C -> Yeah we know that, but it is not conclusion NO
D -> As stated human activity is not related NO
E -> Correct

(C) The chemical composition of Earth and its atmosphere depends, at least to some extent, one the existence and activities of the animals that populate Earth.
