Does where you applying from counts?

Hey,

Just a quick question: When you apply, do they count you towards which region you're applying from or all applicants are equal (which I doubt). In other words, I am an Asian Australian that has spent my last 3 years in China, so when apply for the schools, do they count me as an applicant applying from China or Australia?

I think they would see it based on your nationality. You'll be counted as an Australian (who's working in China).

It counts a lot and could be a significant advantage or disadvantage.

I suspect you would be viewed as an Australian applicant (that is your citizenship, correct?) with international experience in China. My guess is both of those factors would be favorable to your application. I am not sure how many people apply out of Australia (to U.S. schools), but I think the number is relatively low, which could help you stand out. China is a hot market right now, obviously, which should also help your chances. Good luck.

thanx a million bee186 and sudden. Those are very very encouraging words that I will take into heart.

sudden: yes, my citizenship is currently Australian and I have started my career off in China straight after graduating with international exchange experiences in Singapore as well. To be honest, only couple of my friends are seriously considering applying outside Australia as Melbourne Business School and AGSM already serves applicants working in Australia very well. Good luck to the both of you as well. I hope our paths crosses one day.

rw6183 - finally another Australian in the forum :). One thing I must tell you, however, is that being Australian alone isn't enough. You need to use the Australian background to your advantage in your essays. I've already had 2 dings and 1 waitlist (and I applied from Australia).

I think it certainly does. For example (assuming you are living in the US and applying to a US school), if you apply at an "up and coming" school - say a top 30 that has a very regional pool of applicants. Being from the other side of the country could boost your chances as they could have an applicant from a new region, which would boost their alumni network nationally, etc etc....

I think this was part of my VERY warm welcome from vandy - since I am from the pacific northwest. They only get 7% of their students from the west coast, and I imagine california takes most of those spots.

bsd_lover: thanx for the advices mate, I'll def. take it into heart. I think its true though that applying from China alone doesn't get you points, but applying from China or wherever with an Australian background would def. help. Good luck in your applications, and keep in touch dude. :-D :-D

You have to cleverly spin your stories, weave in to your essays about being in China & being an Australian. I'm sure you can do it.

Re: the Australian that lived in china.
This is indeed a GREAT thing to weave into your stories. I got a couple of comments in interviews about my essays where i mentioned my time as an american in japan as living in "the only non-western, non judeo-christian G12 country". It was a GREAT angle to use!

oh GOD am I EVERY missing it. I had never been homesick a day in my life.... until I left Japan. The last 11 months have been SOOOO tough :(

Screw disneyland. Japan is truly the "happiest place on earth".
