HELP........(48Q, 21V) Badly need to improve

HELP........(48Q, 21V) Badly need to improve [#permalink] New post   06 Dec 2013, 15:34
HI all, I studied around 25 days and received 570 in my first attempt. I will be making applications next year though. I read the theory of Verbal from Manhattan but I just received 21. I am shooting for 40. I have no clue what to do to make my verbal score go up. I did practice from Verbal review the SC and CR. But again I do not completely understand the explanation behind them. In Math I got 48 and I shooting for 50. I am ready to put as much effort as necessary. I a looking towards taking coaching in order to improve my score.

The explanations for OG are always difficult to understand. We have video solutions that make better sense of the SC questions in the book - all 140 + 15 or so diagnostic ones. You can check them out here: https://www.gmatpill.com/official-guide-gmat/

But importantly, you should open yourself to outside assistance. If you continue doing what you are doing now, you'll just remain in the same place. Theory is fine - but on the test, you will be actually applying concepts in a timed environment -- that requires a bit more training.

Given that verbal level, I think you're missing some fundamental skills (but you should be able to learn them within a year).

Suggestions:
-Look into SAT verbal prep material, and do some practice SATs. TPR/Kaplan/SAT official guide are all fine.
-Buy MGMAT's practice exams & and the 800score tests that's sort of bundled with it
-Buy the GMAT official guide
-Buy Kaplan's practice exams
-Read "Elements of Style"

The SAT Writing/Critical Reading sections are perfect for low-level practice imo. As you start to nail those questions, you "graduate" to GMAT verbal; hopefully the explanations will make a lot more sense after doing SAT prep.
