(A)having hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia, help explain why scientists have assumed that it
(B)having hundreds of miniature eyes that are called ommatidia, helps explain why scientists have assumed that they
(C)with its hundreds of miniature eyes that are called ommatidia, helps explain scientists` assuming that they
(D)with its hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia, help explain scientists` assuming that it
(E)with its hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia, helps explain why scientists have assumed that it
Answer is E.But in answer choice c and d whats the problem with scientists` assuming?why scientists` assuming is wrong?
This one was easy :
Put back C in the sentence and we get :
The intricate structure of the compound insect eye
with its hundreds of miniature eyes that are called ommatidia, helps explain scientists` assuming that they evolved independently of the vertebrate eye.
1. They refers to compound insect eye which is singular, so intead of "They" , "it" is the correct usage. This boils down to pronoun error.
2. Also, note the meaning change :
The intended meaning is :-> " with its hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia " explains why scientists have assumed so.
Where as in C, It states that " with its hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia " explains scientists' assuming something.
It means two things :
a. It means , The intricate structure of the compound insect eye helps explain to scientists who have assumed something ! Doesnot make sense.
b. However on a closer inspection it may mean, it explains the assumption of scientists. On what grounds have scientists assumed something ? that is infact explained due to the fact that a compound insect has hundereds od miniature eyes and so the insect evolved independtly of the vertebrate eye ( The intended meaning)
So, There is an sort of amiguity in C structure. It may give us intended meaning . It may also give some other meaning (as in point a mentioned above), So E is preferred as it gives the intended meaning clearly and also it corrects the pronoun error.
Also, If you were able to note the pronoun error, it is much easier to eliminate C and choose E when only C and E are left.
Hope it helps.
