In a poll, 400 users were asked why they revisited a certain website. The number who responded "well-designed" was 225 and the number who responded "interesting content" was 186. How many responded with neither of those phrases?

(1) The number who responded "well designed" and "interesting content" was 20 percent of those who responded "well designed"
(2) The number who responded "interesting content" but did not respond "well design" was 141.

Given
T = 400
Wd = 225
Ic = 186
Both = B
Neither = ? -- > Target Question

400 = 225 + 186 – B + N


(1) Sufficient
400 = 225 + 186 – (1/5)225 + N
1 equation & 1 variable = you can solve


(2) Sufficient
Ic = Both + Ic only
186 = B + 141
B = 45

400 = 225 + 186 – 45 + N
1 equation & 1 variable = you can solve

You need to assume that 'well-designed' and 'interesting' were the only two options - would the GMAT not explicitly mention that these were the only two survey options / responses?

Hi,
I´m not so sure about that. The question stem is saying that in a poll, these are the responses from 2 of the categories surveyed. Whether there were more categories or these were the only ones is irrelevant, I think. Let´s say there were more categories. The question stem is only focusing on these 2 and is asking about these 2.

By the way, this is an official question.

Yep good point - there could be other categories but the number not in the named categories will remain the same (37). Thanks for clarifying.

Btw, I think the actual number in "Neither" is 34; not 37. Anyhow, it is not necessary to know this final number. What´s relevant is to know that if you wish (if you had the time!), you could know so.
