In township K, 1/5 of the housing units are equipped with cable television. If 1/10 of the housing units, including 1/3 of those that are equipped with cable television, are equipped with videocassette recorders, what fraction of the housing units have neither cable television nor videocassette recorders?

draw a chart 4x4

a horizont line -- the number of houses with CTV -- No w/o -- total
a vertical line

the number of houses with VR

the number of houses without VR

total

Since you have fugures 3, 5, and 10, let the total number of housing be 150. Then follow the question stem and fill the chart.

stolyar,
thanks for the compliments :oops: :oops:

Well, I am not exactly "back". I just thought I would relive my old pre-GMAT days. It was great fun to be part of this group.
Although I do hang around the group, I don't particiapte in the forum. I guess I cannot let go of this wonderful group for two reasons:
1) bb is a great motivator. I want to learn more from him about how one can believe in something and carry it to fruition. Hats off to bb. It needs a lot of self motivation, self belief and passion to go on the way bb goes on with this site.
2) I have not seen a more selfless person than stolyar. His contribution is immeasurable not because of the 2000+ messages that he has posted, but because of the passion that he infuses in those messages, because of the fighthing spirit that he exhibits in those messages.

thanks both of you guys.......it is an honour to be part of something so special......

C = 1/5 V = 1/10 Both = 1/30

so 1 = C+V+neither-Both

1 = 1/5+1/10+Neither-1/30
Neither = 11/15 or 22/30
what is wrong here ?

well I got the mistake

Cable + VCR = 1/30 so Only VCR = 1/10 - 1/30 = 2/30

so 1 = 1/5+2/30+Neither-1/30
1 = 1/5+1/30+neither
1 = 7/30+neither
Neither = 23/30

OR

Let there be 30 housing units (common denominator)

1/5 * 30 = 6 units with Cable
1/10 * 30 = 3 units with VCR
of these 3 units, 2 also have cable (1/3 * 6) so really, only one unit has VCR only.

Cable only = 6 - 2 = 4
VCR only = 1
Cable + VCR = 2

Neither = 30 - (4 + 1 + 2) = 23
fraction = 23/30
