Hi there,

First time poster, long-time um... post reader. I recently took the GMAT (for the first time) and scored a 700 (Q47, V40), AWA 6, IR 6--my percentile breakdown was Q: 70%, V: 88. While I've read a number of posts on the general topic of "is a 700 enough?" and found that a 700 is usually deemed sufficient, I am marginally concerned that my quantitative percentile is too low for my target schools (H/S/W, Tuck, Booth, Kellogg, applying R1 '14 for each). Is my concern warranted; i.e., should I consider retaking? I have a strong quantitative background with a MSc in Finance and Economics from a top UK program(me). From your perspective, does this academic qualification reduce or raise possible adcom concerns over my lower Q score/percentile?

Best,

tbearthemizz

Hi tbearthemizz,

Thanks for posting. To begin, a 700 is a strong score, and for top MBA programs it is the cut-off score admissions teams like to see. To answer your question, if you believe you can improve your GMAT score by 30+ points, we do recommend you take the exam again. The reason is on your business school application, your highest score is self-reported on your application, so admissions teams will focus on your highest score. There is no harm in taking the GMAT again.

If you'd like, MBA.com provides 2 free official GMAT practice exams. We also have free GMAT tips here: http://www.stacyblackman.com/gmat-files/

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team
