Lower GPA(3.0) - admission to Canada MBA program in Ontario? [#permalink] New post 02 Oct 2012, 05:55
Hello all,
I have been out of school for 4-5 years. Graduated from U of T's commerce program with a CGPA of 3.01 overall. My GPA last 2 years of studies were about the same, around 3.0. I have been pursuing my CMA(certified managerial accountant) designation, and passed my entrance exam with a pretty high mark of 87. Not employed at the moment but I do have work experience in finance and accounting, although not with big companies. I'm also preparing for my GMAT.
I want to try to get into a decent MBA program, but realized that my GPA is on the low side. If I aim for a GMAT score of above 700, would I have a realistic chance of getting into an MBA program near the Toronto area? Ie: Schulich, Rotman, UTM, McMaster, Laurier, or Brock?

Hi Angela,

Your GPA is actually not bad believe or not. However, if you're worried about your gpa being low, a high GMAT score will erases many past sins. I have much lower CGPA than you and my last 2 years gpa is in the toilet yet here I am at Schulich. In fact most of the schools that interviewed me including some of the top US school never seemed bothered by my GPA, instead they always focus on my GMAT score. Same story with a buddy of mine. Of course we are just a couple of sample points but I think in general this is the case, business school put a lot more emphasis on GMAT than GPA, even though some paid lip service to the holistic approach. If you get your GMAT score in the 700 level, your application will be quite strong and the chance of you getting into the top Canadian school is high.

Btw, UTM doesn't offer MBA, it's part of U of T :)

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I meant the UTM accounting MMPA program! It's not MBA but I might consider it if I don't get into anything else since I'm accounting focused anyway. You put me at ease about my GPA though. I will do my best for a high GMAT score! I was nervous because I did take some electives to pull up my grades. I think I had 2 C's in business related classes, but they were mostly B's and B-'s.

Well, that article really freaked me out as my GPA did not fall into at least half of the school's range of GPAs... Maybe Canadian schools are different? I'm kind of wishing that I didn't slack as much as I did in college now. I know I'm capable of better...

LOL, you're focusing on the wrong thing. The main take away from that article is that your GMAT score has far more weight than anything else in your application, including your GPA. Do well on the GMAT and you'll be fine. Also keep in mind that the schools listed are the top US schools, Canadian schools have lower requirements.
