A mixture of 70 lts. Of wine and water contains 10% of water. How much water must be added to make 37% of the resulting mixture?

I picked this question from one of the sources on the internet.

Can someone please illustrate the solution using the diagram method for alligations .

Also, I feel the qs is dubious in its requirement of 37 % . Does it mean that 37 is the final resultant solution concentration ?


Please advise asap.

70 liters of water
10% water = 7 liters of water
How much water to add to get 37% water?

This one is easy because of the 100 value.

Add 30 liters of water.

The mixture is not 100 liters and of that, 37 liters are water.

37/100 = 37% water.

Not all problems will come to nice round numbers such as this. If it were a 50 liter mixture, it would be 18.5 liters of water. If it ended as a 80 liter mixture, it would be ~29 liters of water.

It's about rations/percents/parts of a whole.

Its given that currently water is 10% of the mixture.

=> (10/100)(70) = 7lts

lets say x ltrs of water is added.


=> 7+x = (37/100)(70+x)

=> x = 30 liters

read it carefully.. "How much water must be added to make 37% of the resulting mixture".. Water must be 37% of the mixture.. I think you know how to solve the problem ..

Poor wording of question, but agree with the others that it must be 37% of new solution to be water.

Just do it this way:

Current solution = 7L water / 63L Wine
New Solution = unknown water / 63L Wine
Wine percentage of New solution = 100%-37% = 63%
So 63% of New solution = 63L
100% of New solution = 100L
37% of New solution = 37L

Water to be added = 37L - 7L (amount of water in previous solution) = 30L

let w=liters of water to be added
.10*70+w=.37(70+w)
w=30 liters
